ICOM Celebrates Third Annual Match Day

Today, the Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine (ICOM) celebrated Match Day with its Class of 2024, as the 147 graduating physicians learned where they will complete their residency training.

Match Day is a major milestone for fourth-year medical students. The annual event occurs on the third Friday in March when the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) notifies graduating medical students from across the country of the location where they will continue their medical training. For several months, students have been applying and interviewing for these coveted spots in their medical specialties of choice.

Sixteen graduates will remain in Idaho for their graduate medical education, also known as residency. In all, ICOM students matched into 19 percent of all PGY-1 residency positions in Idaho.

“The Class of 2024 has shown great resilience in the face of Covid-19 while starting their medical education and have achieved excellent outcomes by matching into residency programs across Idaho and the United States,” said Dr. Kevin Wilson, Dean of ICOM. “Thirty-six students matched into Family Medicine, twenty-six into Internal Medicine, twelve into Pediatrics, and nine students matched into General Surgery, all of which are specialties acutely needed in Idaho and the Northwest. A special thanks to all of the physicians and health care systems in Idaho that have taught our students and provided excellent clinical training opportunities.”

Thirty-six graduating physicians will pursue family medicine, a physician specialty that is critically low in the U.S.; and 52 percent of ICOM’s Class of 2024 will pursue a primary care specialty, which includes family medicine, internal medicine, and pediatrics.

“The education and training of these student doctors and their successful placement into medical and surgical residencies in Idaho and beyond is critical given the acute and growing shortage of physicians in Idaho and across the United States,” said Dr. Tracy Farnsworth, President of ICOM. “We warmly thank and commend our many academic and clinical partners who played important roles in ICOM’s third annual Match.”

ICOM’s Class of 2024 applied to residency programs throughout the country. ICOM graduates matched and will pursue residencies in the following specialties after graduation:

    • Anesthesiology
    • Chid Neurology
    • Diagnostic Radiology
    • Emergency Medicine

    • Internal Medicine
    • Neurology
    • Obstetrics and Gynecology
    • Orthopedic Surgery
