The Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine is proud to recognize its 2026 Preceptors of the Year, honoring outstanding physician educators across each of ICOM’s core clinical training sites.

Selected through nominations and votes from ICOM student physicians, these awards recognize preceptors who exemplify excellence in clinical teaching, mentorship, professionalism, and compassionate patient care. Throughout their clinical rotations, students work closely with physician mentors whose guidance plays a critical role in shaping the next generation of osteopathic physicians.

“Clinical preceptors are among the most influential educators in a medical student’s journey,” said Dr. Rodney Bates, Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs at ICOM. “These physicians not only teach clinical knowledge and skills, but also model empathy, leadership, and dedication to patient-centered care. We are deeply grateful for the impact they have on our students and communities.”

ICOM congratulates the following 2025-2026 Preceptors of the Year:

  • Steven Ayres, MD; Gastroenterology; Benefis Health – Great Falls, MT
  • Vasudha Goel, MD; Anesthesiology; Allina Health – Minneapolis, MN
  • Justin Van Der Meid, MD; Psychiatry; Avera Health – Aberdeen, SD
  • Sean Stringham, MD; Pediatrics; Saint Alphonsus – Boise, ID

Students praised this year’s honorees for their commitment to teaching, willingness to invest time in mentorship, and ability to create meaningful clinical learning experiences. Many described their preceptors as role models who inspired confidence, curiosity, and compassion throughout their rotations.
