Pre-clinical students at the Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine put their anesthetics skills to the test during the College’s annual “Anesthesia Olympics” event.

Organized by Dr. Michael D. Gold, an anesthesiologist and adjunct faculty member at ICOM, this event provided an opportunity for students to showcase various skills from arterial line placement and basic airway management, to delicate spinal anesthetics.

ICOM’s “Anesthesia Olympics” required participants to complete stations that showcase different skills. Students are given a maximum of three minutes to complete each station, but the faster the procedures are completed, the higher their score.

Second-year students Michael Larsen and Jonah Jones won first place; with Landon Hatch and Jeremy Clayton, also both second-year students, came in second. The award for best team name was given to Katie Rynearson and Colette Mardirossian for “Gassy Girls.”

The winners received a coveted “Larry” award, modeled after an anesthesiologist’s most handy tool — a laryngoscope. The hand-blown glass awards were made by Dr. Gold.
