Today, the Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine (ICOM) celebrated Match Day with its Class of 2026, as the 146 graduating physicians learned where they will complete their residency training. ICOM is proud to share that 100 percent of its graduating student physicians matched into residency training programs.
Match Day is a major milestone for fourth-year medical students. The annual event occurs on the third Friday in March when the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) notifies graduating medical students from across the country of the location where they will continue their medical training. For several months, students have been applying and interviewing for these coveted spots in their medical specialties of choice.
Sixteen graduates will remain in Idaho for their graduate medical education, also known as residency.
“Congratulations to ICOM’s Class of 2026 on their outstanding results from the 2026 residency match,” said Dr. Kevin Wilson, Dean and Chief Academic Officer at ICOM. “The 16 student physicians who matched into Idaho residency programs greatly increases their chances of staying in Idaho to practice. I’d also like to thank all the program directors in Idaho and all the physician preceptors who have worked with ICOM students to prepare them for this day.”
The most popular specialty amongst ICOM’s Class of 2026 is family medicine, with 40 graduates pursuing that specialty. Internal medicine is the second most favored specialty amongst the class, with 32 graduates pursuing that specialty.
Overall, 86 graduates — or approximately 60% of the class — will pursue a primary care specialty, which includes family medicine, internal medicine, and pediatrics.
“Idaho and much of the country suffer from an acute and growing shortage of physicians,” said Dr. Tracy J. Farnsworth, President of ICOM. “Thankfully, a goodly number of these new graduate-resident-physicians will one day return to Idaho and other underserved communities.”
ICOM’s Class of 2026 applied to residency programs throughout the country. ICOM graduates matched and will pursue residencies in 20 specialties after graduation, including:
- Anesthesiology
- Child Neurology
- Dermatology
- Diagnostic Radiology
