The Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine (ICOM) was founded in 2016 and developed its first Strategic Plan at that time with the founding leadership. This strategic plan was reviewed and approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) as a component of its pre-accreditation self-study. That original plan included statements of mission, vision, and strategic goals/objectives. These core guiding elements of the plan cannot be amended until the ICOM becomes fully accredited (likely in 2022). However, periodic updates regarding the supporting actions and processes necessary to effectuate the Strategic Plan are required.
While leaving its mission, vision, goals, and objectives the same, ICOM embarked on a journey to review and update the strategic plan in the Spring of 2021. During a six month period, ICOM held a series of meetings with key stakeholders including, faculty, staff, and students in large and small groups and conducted multiple surveys to allow all constituents to have a voice in the process. ICOM utilized the services of an outside expert in strategic planning to guide our efforts.
This process was a major undertaking to update and fully align the College’s current and future actions, supporting activities, and key performance indicators (KPIs) with the guiding Plan elements of mission, vision and goals as they were originally stated. This exercise included an overall environmental assessment which has informed the ICOM Annual Budget and Five Year Financial Plan. Finally, a great deal of thought went into revising the ICOM’s core values to reflect the internal and external focus of the institution which has grown considerably since its inception.
The ICOM Board of Trustees approved the new document in June 2021. ICOM is pleased to present its updated strategic plan, but is fully cognizant of the fact that all strategic planning is a continual work in progress. ICOM will revisit, review, and update the strategic plan again in the coming years and expects further revisions as the institution continues to evolve.
